Session 4: Learning about our patterns of reactivity to stress
Meditations, poems & resources

Guided meditations

You can access the guided meditations either from a shared google folder or on the Insight Timer app (which is free to use). Note that the meditations may differ slightly in length.

Some people prefer to use the Insight Timer app as it logs each session so you can track your progress. It also has hundreds of thousands of other guided meditations (mostly for free), so if the timing or voice of the suggested resources doesn't work for you you can search 'MBSR body scan' & see if there is a better version for you.

An Autobiography in 5 short chapters - Portia Nelson

Chapter I
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost.
I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

Chapter II
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter III
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in.
It's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter IV
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter V
I walk down another street.

Peace Is This Moment Without Judgment - Dorothy Hunt

Do you think peace requires an end to war?
Or tigers eating only vegetables?
Does peace require an absence from
your boss, your spouse, yourself?...
Do you think peace will come some other place than here?
Some other time than Now?
In some other heart than yours?

Peace is this moment without judgment.
That is all. This moment in the Heart-space
where everything that is is welcome.
Peace is this moment without thinking
that it should be some other way,
that you should feel some other thing,
that your life should unfold according to your plans.

Peace is this moment without judgment,
this moment in the Heart-space where
everything that is is welcome.
